Notes

John 14

12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. .

 Context

  • Mindset: The New Psychology of Success – By Carol Dweck

Fixed Mindset – A thought or mindset that is set or fixed in a specific point in time

  • Will I fail
  • Will I look stupid
  • Can I do it
  • Feelings of rejection tied to a person’s worth
  • play it safe
  • the worst fear is trying and failing

Growth Mindset – A mindset that revolves around growth feedback and continuous improvement

  • Everyone can change and grow
  • Thinking about how to make improvements
  • Don’t label themselves in a negative fashion
  • Don’t overestimate their abilities because they are always open to feedback and process improvement
  • Setbacks become learning lessons
  • Some people will end up doing what seems impossible
  • Study to learn while remaining positive

Reflection Questions

How was and is your current environment?  Does it foster a growth or fixed mindset?

  • Does or did your environment reward good grades, perfection and excellence? Or, does your environment reward hard work, continuous improvement and process?
  • i.e. black women don’t test well or girls aren’t good at math

What do you believe about failure?

How do you get to a growth mindset?

Recognize at some point in time, a fix mind served a purpose.  It protected individuals from failure.  It made them feel secure.  It protected self-esteem. If you want to grow and reach your full potential learn to take a risk.

Remember a single point in time does not determine how smart you are or your ability.

Reflection Questions – Think about where you want to go and whether or not your mindset will take you there

Are you here to learn?

When does learning stop?

How do you view failure?

Do you see challenges as hard or fun?

How does others’ success make you feel?

How can you create more learning experiences for yourself?

How do you feel about working harder and extra effort?
