Context Matters: Re-reading for liberation: For years the dominate culture has tried to make to promote one, right reading of the Bible. As a result, people who have been marginalized have struggled to find their identity in the biblical text, or have done so in ways that are oppressive. Gender, racial, and ethnic stereotypes are pervasive in our society as a result of particular readings of scripture. What does it mean for ‘minorities’ to find and re-claim the Bible for liberation.
Minister Yolonda Norton addresses the issue that “Well behaved women rarely make history.” Harriett Tubman, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marian Wright Edelman, Hillary Clinton; these women all have a mark in history because they refused to bow down to conventional standards of the world and decided instead to stand up for what they believed to be right.
